Leadership and COUNT your Blessings
You know who I am talking about - the person who you see on Monday morning at work. They are grumpy, depressed, and angry at the whole world.
If I thought like these people think, here is what would be on my mind this morning...
- This weekend went by way too fast!
- My back is killing me!
- My bank account is low and I am sick of living paycheck to paycheck!
- It was two years ago this week that my sister died of cancer and God took her away from us!
- I also wish my mom was still alive!
- My pool is a mess, and I can't get it clean!
- This morning I had to park 4 blocks away from work because I got to work late because my son missed the bus because my stupid dog got out this morning and made us late!
- How come I don't have a private office and others do?
- My cube walls are too low and don't allow privacy!
- Gas prices are way too high!
- I should make more money!
- How will this health care reform affect me?
and so on and so on and so on...trust me, I could go on!
But why???
What value is there in always being pessimistic?
There is an old Christian song called "Count your blessings," and it goes a little something like this...
Count your blessings, name them one by one...
Count your blessings, see what God has done...
Count your blessings, name them one by one...
Count your many blessings - see what God has done!
I truly try to live like these lyrics. In fact, I have a teenage niece, who is ALWAYS complaining about what she does NOT have. I like to sing this song and dance around the room in front of her.
It drives her nuts, and as her Crazy Uncle Pete, that gives me lots of joy. Hopefully I am getting through to her.
Instead of the pessimistic attitude, here is what I am actually thinking about today at work...
- I am glad I have a car that is paid off!
- I am glad I do not have to pay $25 a month to park in a parking deck!
- I am so blessed to have two healthy and happy kids who love God and love me!
- I have the most beautiful and smart wife that any man could ever have! Bonus: she is also my best friend!
- I have a job and insurance!
- I am glad that my mom and sister are not suffering anymore!
- I love that my dog greets me at the door everyday when I come home - because my kids have stopped doing that
- I am thankful for my strong faith!
and so on and so on and so on...trust me, I could go on!
Don't be that guy (or gal) in the office this week!
Count your blessings...
