Leadership and Friends don't let friends have crummy friends

With all the great books on leadership in the marketplace, I frequently find myself returning to the greatest self-help book on management that has ever been written - the book of Proverbs in the Bible.

Proverbs 22:24-25 reminds us:

"Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared." (NIV)

As leaders, it is IMPERATIVE that you surround yourself with the right people.  Your employees will judge you by the company that you keep.  It is hard to gain trust and respect if your peer group is not well-respected.

And by the way, how is your temper?

We all know of the politician, leader, manager or supervisor who cannot control their temper and get easily angered.  Great leaders will showcase patience and an even keel.

Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy is a great example. His book, Quiet Strength, reminds us all that you can lead while keeping your emotions in check (although as a child, Tony admits he did his fair share of yelling).

In 2010, great leaders will work on tempering their temper and befriending the right friends.

Who knew leadership could be so simple...
