Leadership and DIRECTV for all the world to see
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the day with the Huntsville Call Center Staff of DIRECTV. About 100 team leads, trainers and managers spent half the day in what they termed a "leadership summit."
They asked me to come in and talk about leadership strategies for 2010. As is always the case, I think I ended up learning more than they did. Here are some leadership lessons that I took away from the event.

Corporate culture plays a huge role in your organization. I have been in many call centers, and this one seemed to be full of life, energy, and enthusiasm. In fact, when I mentioned this in the group, a spontaneous applause broke out for one of the managers who was actively involved in enhancing the culture. Now that's success!
- Your employees need to be reminded of what the organization is providing for them. Naturally, DIRECTV employees get DIRECTV at home (nice perk!). They also have tuition reimbursement and an on-site health center (as a two year pilot). But over time, your employees may start to forget these are employee 'benefits' and become to think of them as employee 'expectations.' As a leader, you need to constantly remind your employees that your organization offers them a whole lot more than just a salary.
- Most employees are HUNGRY for leadership training and developmental opportunities. Very few of the 100 people yesterday seemed distant or disenfranchised with the event. Most were excited, participative, and engaged. As a leader, it does not take much to motivate most of your employees., and you have the power to make it happen. All it takes is a little creativity and innovation. After all, Albert Einstein once said "Imagination is more important than knowledge." (Thanks, Omar...)
DIRECTV really seemed to be on the right track. After all, any company that has 'Leadership' as one of its key values has to be a good place, right?
They even got me thinking about dropping my cable subscription...
