Leadership and Taking Chances
"There are two types of decisions: reversible and non-reversible. Most of the decisions you make in life will be reversible..."
This thought pattern allows us to take chances. It allows us to take risks. It allows us to try new things and move forward and not remain stagnant.
Learning is no longer just for the classroom environment. In fact, research shows that over 75% of learning takes place in an informal way. Here in the PBJC Training environment, we are trying many new ways to share learning...
- We are writing a bi-weekly blog
- We have created a Twitter account and are sending out training blasts
- We are testing a new "electronic learning environment" where we will facilitate leadership classes in an computer lab thereby allowing us to collect data
- We will soon put training videos and vignettes on YouTube for all to access
Every single one of these are reversible decisions. If they do not work, we will stop them. We will then try something else. That is the beauty of a reversible decision. It truly is a 'no harm, no foul' concept.
We will not sit back and let the world pass us by. We will not stand for the status quo. We will not keep doing it the same way because "...that is the way we have always done it."
As a leader, you should be thinking the exact same way. You should be encouraging your employees to take calculated risks and educated chances. Otherwise, there will be no improvement in your area.
A company/department/jurisdiction that fails to change is doomed to fail.
So go on - take calculated risks - take chances - and remember that most decisions are reversible - and that may be some of the best news I can share with you!
