Leadership and Why Ask Why? (Drink Bud Dry!)

Why?

A simple one word question that has a million wrong answers.

"Because I said so!" - (Too parental sounding)

"Because I am the boss and you are the employee, that's why!" - (Too dictatorial)

"Because we've always done it this way." - (Don't even get me started on this one...)

The bottom line is that none of us have truly grown up when it comes to the question of 'Why?'  For many of us, it was our first childish rebellion.  We did not want to do our chores until someone told us why...

We are no different today, and your employees are no different either.  As a leader, you must be able to answer the question of 'why' in a short, succinct manner.

When you blow off your employees and don't tell them WHY you made this decision or WHY you did not listen to them or WHY you asked them to do work that is not in their job description, they get angry, upset and frustrated.

It is hard to build trust with your employees when they are angry, upset and frustrated.

So go ahead.  Let them ask WHY?  Give them a good answer, and you will be on your way to building a high performing team!

By the way, 'why' did Bud Dry ever go away?  Just wondering...
