Leadership and Giving Back

Yesterday I had the privilege to spend a 1/2 day volunteering at the Birmingham ZooI trimmed around the bald eagle exhibit and weeded around the plants.  Our team did other duties as well, such as fluffing exhibits, raking pathways, and re-mucking the pig pens.

I enjoyed the day for two reasons.

First, it was great to spend time with my co-workers in a setting other than work.  There are no levels or titles when everyone is wearing jeans and working in the rain.  Everyone is treated the same and is on the same playing field where the dialogue flows nice and easy.

Second, while I have previously visited the zoo, I saw it in a whole new light.  There are so many things that need to be done by volunteers.  In fact, our representative told us that our team of 15 represented almost two full weeks of labor...just by us all being there for a 1/2 day.

Leadership does NOT stop at the end of your office.  You are a leader 24/7.  Leadership is a part of you, and encompasses every aspect of your life.  There are so many opportunities for us to give back to our communities.

For more information on volunteer opportunities in the greater Birmingham area, logon to www.handsonbirmingham.org.  If you are not from Alabama, visit www.handsonnetwork.org to find a location near you.

And if that isn't incentive enough, you could receive a 1-day Disney Theme Parks Ticket in 2010 just for volunteering in your community.

You could make a difference in someone's life, AND go to Disney for it?  Who says volunteering isn't magical?
