Leadership and Scarcity

On the radio this morning, I heard a speaker use the following comments:

"Scarcity brings Clarity."

He was using it in a religious context as it relates to getting back to what matters most when times are tough.  While I agree, I also believe it applies even more in a LEADERSHIP perspective.

You see, times are tough right now, and every day leaders are bring asked to do more with less.  Here in Jefferson County, AL, our county government workers have been shifted to 32 hour work weeks.  That comes out to a 20% pay cut.

The good news for the employees is that also means 20% less stress, 20% less headaches, and 20% less conflict.  What a blessing!

Of course, the above is written in sarcastic tone, as stress, headaches and conflict are sure to rise during this time.  Leaders are bound to have to deal with more and more employee issues than ever before.  But remember our mantra for today...

"Scarcity brings Clarity."

So how can we apply this phrase as leaders to help us through these tough economic times?

It means we need to really focus in on the things that matter.  I mean a LASER-SHARP focus.  The clarity comes when we really understand that the most important thing about our jobs every day is the people we lead.  They need you now more than ever.  They need your wisdom, they need your wit, they need your support, they need your listening skills, and they need your confidence.

Scarcity means less money for recognition programs.  Scarcity means less time for 1-1 coaching and feedback.  Scarcity means doing the same amount of work with less resources.

And you know what...LEADERSHIP means leadingSo do not use this time as an excuse for poor leadership.  Instead, use it as a time to truly stand out as a great leader!

Here are some things you can do to help lead in a scarce environment...

  • Work on your time management skills.  Go to a class or read a book.  Really make the most of every minute of every day.
  • Put your employees first.  Now more than ever, they may need to vent, share, or bounce ideas off of you.  If you want to continue to get the most out of them, you need to make time for them.
  • Remember that "...this too shall pass."  Everything is cyclical, and true leaders are always guiding their teams to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck turning "scarcity" into "clarity" this week!   - Pete
